A Publishing Company,

                            

Computer Support Officer  9/03-Current

 

· Setup, maintain and troubleshoot fifty computers including PC desktops, PC laptops, and Apple Macs.

· Create and manipulate XML documents, which serve to publish company’s journals.

· Perform network tasks such as permissions in Active Directory, changing and assigning IP addresses to MAC addresses, resetting passwords, adding users to groups,  and adding computers to domains. Some examples.

· Implemented a VNC system on all computers and servers so we can access certain computers resources without physically being at the computers.

· Administer backups via a Dell Powervault 120T super DLT Library ( 20 tape ) and two SDLT tape drives running Computer Associate's ArcServe 2000.

· Setup and maintained onsite printers including HP and Epson brands.

· Used Photoshop to scan and adjust images for a project.

· Go through XML to make sure files are well formed, have appropriate data in fields, and to take out characters such as "< & >".

COMPUTER SKILLS:

 

Operating Systems Experience
DOS Although it is rare to find anyone running on DOS, there are parts of the system that are used in Windows.  DOS commands are used frequently by computer savy people. Some examples: command -typing this will pull up the dos screen within Windows; ipconfig -a quick way of finding an IP address, ipconfig /all will give you the MAC address as well

Windows (3.x-XP) Its the standard. Administratively, used Computer Management, Services, System very frequently. Very familar with network setups including setting up profiles, users, and groups.

MacOS I used Apples exclusively in my print shop job. I routinely performed maintenance including setting up an Appletalk network. Recently, I have worked with OSX 10.2 +.

Linux/UNIX Experience in UNIX (RMIT CS Department runs entirely on UNIX for programming etc.) 

Experience with Red Hat Linux 8 & 9 

Experience with Suse Linux 

Took the following 2 classes on Linux 

  • Introduction to Linux (Bentley College)

Pocket PC/Windows Mobile/Win CE I currently own a Toshiba e740 PDA. PocketPC is very buggy but is one of two choices as an operating system for PDAs.

Palm Os The more stable of the two choices of OS for PDAs.

BeOS An open source operating system which lived a short life.
   
Web Development& Databases  
html Everything you see on the web is html based. This page is written in HTML 4.01 Transitional and it validates. I have taken a couple courses on web design including learning about xhtml and CSS.

xml Used in current job position. Have manipulated much XML to validate.

Apache Experienced in setting up, configuring, and securing an Apache server. This includes implementing SSL and authentication. School related Apache examples.

php The open source web programming language. The pictures part of this website is written in php. I have taken a PHP programming at RMIT.

ColdFusion

Experience with current job. -One of the leading web programs out there. Many sites use to manage ecommerce. Work related Coldfusion examples.


asp The Microsoft web programming language.

MySQL / SQL select * from table where blah=27. The pictures part of this website uses SQL. I have taken a couple of classes on SQL

Microsoft Access Versed in making forms and queries.

Macromedia DreamWeaver A very powerful web design product. Often used and has a powerful search and replace function which can be implemented on folders.

Microsoft FrontPage Much hated by web gurus because of its tendency of add extra code or to code pages to render in Internet Explorer. Most of this site was created in Frontpage and then had its code manually edited to render correctly in all browsers.

FTP Used extensively to upload files. FTP example

Web Statistics Experience with Windows server log files as well as manipulating results with WebTrends & AWStats. School related stats examples.

Graphics  
Adobe Photoshop The logo of this site was done via Photoshop. sed extensively when working in the print shop. Also used with current job. Graphics example

Adobe Illustrator The neilmoreton.com, circular logo on the top left was done using Illustrator with lighting effects. Used extensively when working in the print shop. Also used with current job. Graphics example

QuarkXpress The desktop publishing tool of choice. Used extensively when working in the print shop. Also used with current job.

Adobe PageMaker Similar to Quark, it was used extensively at the print shop.

Macromedia Flash When used in small amount Flash tends to look great on sites.

Adobe Acrobat Experience in managing Acrobat documents as well as troubleshooting the program.
Networking/Hardware  
TCP/IP Very familiar with the protocol and its relevance to computer administration on a network. I often had to assign fixed ips to certain computers within our company network.

Wireless Have set up wireless routers including WEP and MAC address filtering.

Computer/Notebooks At my current position, I am in charge of supporting 10 or so notebooks. When internal parts go faulty such as a hard drive, I open up the computer and replace the part. Desktops occasionally need things such as CD ROMs or RAM replaced and thus I take apart the computer for repairs.

Printers Very experienced in changing printer cartridges and troubleshooting problems.
